Harlem. 155th & Fredrick Douglass Blvd. Harlem playground director Holcombe Rucker founded the park’s inaugural tournament, The Rucker League, in the ‘50s. Through the course of decades to follow, the park has hosted the likes of NBA Legends from Dr J, Wilt the Stilt and Kobe to street legends PeeWee Kirkland and Earl Manigault. There are New York basketball courts and then there is Rucker Park.

Sparking the careers of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Sammy Davis Jr., James Brown, Gladys Knight, Luther Vandross, D’Angelo and Lauryn Hill to name a few. Black American history captured.

Emanuel exited the Victoria Underground station and headed South to Dominque Ansel Bakery. He had a bit of time to kill before meeting Celeste for afternoon tea and wanted to surprise her with Cronuts. He stood for a moment glancing to the east. It appeared the forecast was correct. The storm clouds were rolling in. He frowned. He’d left his umbrella at the door.

Better get a move on it.

He tucked his chin, tightened the lapels on his jacket and made his way South down Buckingham Palace Rd, made a right on Elizabeth St, passed the coach station, and headed into the bakery…
